Important Blog Post!

We interrupt your normal bloggy reading for a breaking headline….

This was the last quilted aqua block… BEFORE

And the same block AFTER…

So now the newsflash!

ย All the pinwheels are quilted and it is time for the white work to begin!ย  Yay for new color to work with and new shapes to make!ย

For this part I will be using this excellent group of items for my hand quilting adventure ๐Ÿ™‚

Okay… thanks for giving me a minute….

I am off on my adventure of hand quilting!

Love that… Update!

It has been a busy week around here… I finally got my Florida drivers license ๐Ÿ™‚

And even though my family calls me “crash” (because I have had a few wrecks… not my fault mainly but still) I have a SAFE DRIVER icon on my license now ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Love that!

I got my license because my daughter needed an state ID to fly to Tennessee for a little 2 week vaca.ย  She got her ID and I got my license… then we prepped her to be away for 2 weeks… her brother doted on her and helped her get her toenails painted…

Such a sweet moment… and this is the ONLY place this pic is gonna be seen so enjoy it!ย  Her bro is 28 but still is embarrassed that I caught this shot of him painting his sisters nails.. his first time to try it and he ROCKED it!

Then my honey found a STEAL on Craigslist… this great edger for our crazy St. Augustine grass…

for only $40.00!!!ย  In great gently used condition and normally this style of edger would cost about $200.00 new ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Yahoo!ย  My honey loves it!ย  So we got it for him for an early Father’s Day present ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Love that too!

Once my honey had the yard looking spiffy he decided to work in the back yard some more and set up this darling….

water feature on a slate table we have sitting out in the Florida room.. so no water damage to worry over and a great addition to my relaxing space here.ย  It stands about 2 feet tall and just has the most gently trickle.. LOVE that too!

On the aloe vera front….

It is growing hair like things on the stems to each bloom… see them better on this close up…

It is slowly maturing the blooms and getting ready but we have also had lots of rain in the last few days and that could be slowing down it’s maturity.ย  Thanks Tropical Storm Andrea!

Elsewhere in the back yard… the wandering jew is growing noticably longer but we aren’t having to groom it to keep the shape… very interesting….

And the mexican petunias are recovering from being replanted…

And this remains my fave area of the back yard blooms right now…

The blooms are an electric lavender color against deep green leaves and the backdrop of the elephant ear is just glorious color combos for me ๐Ÿ™‚

When DL isn’t painting Brandi’s nails he is making a header for my Patchwork Friends facebook group!ย  This is the backdrop … a pic taken by one of the members in her archives of quilts she has made…

then DL is making the name over it with Photoshoppe! Yay ๐Ÿ™‚ย  I don’t understand photoshop… but he does ๐Ÿ™‚ย  LOVE THAT!!!

And finally my fave thing is my progress on the quilt for Pam.ย  I have 6 pinwheels to quilt then I start quilting butterflies on the white spots created by joining all the squares ๐Ÿ™‚ย  I ordered special hand quilters cotton YLI brand thread and am planning on using some white perle 12 cotton for the butterflies to make them pop a bit off the white areas ๐Ÿ™‚ย  I will show you as I work on them ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Love it all!

Thanks for visiting with me and would love for you to join Patchwork Friends on facebook here!

Have a blessed crafty weekend ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Loving doing that myself!

See Rock City!

That’s right… Rock City, Tennessee… I grew up in TN and lived there until just about 6 months ago.ย  When we moved to Florida my dad made and gave us this great birdhouse as a housewarming gift ๐Ÿ™‚

And here is where it sat since we moved in…

On the birdbath…lol!

Now it has a place of honor…

But it caused my honey to have to do a lot of work!

And the Mexican Petunias got a little wilted in the process… so extra potting soil was added and extra water was given and bread crumbs added to the ledge around it to attract the birds…

On the quilting front the quilt along has started at Patchwork Friends facebook page so come over and join us here!

I am quilting on my pinwheel quilt for Pam while I wait for fabric inspiration for my next quilt to start!ย  Right now I am quilting #27 of 42 pinwheels with aqua blue thread… very festive!

Have a blessed week!

Quilt Along Starts TODAY!

Wanna learn to quilt or finish a quilt or start a new quilt???

This month I am hosting a quilt along… to play all you have to do it try to quilt something!

This could be a wall hanging, bag, or a quilt!ย  You choose… just come over to facebook on Patchwork Friends here to join our closed group for non sharing pics we can share just with each other!

So for me… I am planning this quilt as my 7th quilted item…

A Lone Star quilt.. with Eleanor Burns to show me the way to make this quilt for my first time ๐Ÿ™‚
I plan to make it with this layout and the size will be about 90 long by 102 wide.

The receiver of this quilt is picking out their inspiration fabric but expect to get it and the rest of the fabric in the next 2 weeks so I can share it with you!!!!

I will be doing this in teals and tans with beige background… think beachy colors ๐Ÿ™‚ย  This will be my bff Brandy’s quilt for her and her hubby’s bed… they are picking out the fabric together!ย  Love that!

ย So I needed a project to be available to each of you playing along to help you and still be quilting in between so I am quilting this quilt…

For my bff Pam.ย  She chose the design first… then found inspirational fabric… then we pulled in more fat quarters and the background fabric!ย  Fabulous ๐Ÿ™‚

So I am quilting all the pinwheels by hand as this will stabilize all the backing.ย  I pin basted this quilt like this…

I started quilting in the center and worked my way out… now I am on this block… can you find it on the quilt top ?

I send the receiver pics from time to time so she knows I am steadily working on it… read more on previous posts about “pams quilt” for more info on the process of quilting or even a tutorial on how to put this square together ๐Ÿ™‚

My passion is handquilting… I use short large eyed needles and heavy 40 wt or larger threads typically when I handquilt.ย  I don’t use a hoop as I find they change my natural stitching and make it unpleasant to look at… I much prefer straightening the pinned fabric and hand stitching although I have done a machine stitched quilt and can help you if you are planning to machine quilt your project.

So now it is your turn.ย  Are you in??? Come on over to Patchwork Friends or reply here and tell me what your design is and what your colors are gonna be!ย  Leave a link to a blog post if you prefer not to write twice… that is what I am doing.. this blog post will be linked on Patchwork Friends …

What is your passion in the crafty realm?ย  Doesn’t have to be a quilty response… what do you enjoy crafty the most???ย

So now it is your turn.ย  Are you in??? Come on over to Patchwork Friends or reply right here and tell me what your design is and what your colors are gonna be!ย  Leave a link to a blog post if you prefer not to write twice… that is what I am doing.. this blog post will be linked on Patchwork Friends …

Happy crafting whatever you are doing this month!

Cool 3D Altered Project with Lots of pics :)

Today I have such a treat for you!ย ย

Yesterday I got my papercrafting jive on with my bff (best freakin friend) Pammy and made this!

I enlarged the pic… it is an 8″ x 8″ box about 2 or 3″ deep Pammy found on clearance at michaels…

We prepared items during the week and got together at her house on Friday for a fun day of crafting… 5 hours later I left with THIS!ย  Isn’t it awesome ๐Ÿ™‚ย  It is for my mom and dad’s 50th wedding anniversary coming up later in June but I wanted to share this with you today because I am so happy with it…ย

Let me take you on a tour ๐Ÿ™‚

Starting in the left lower corner… check out the depth on this cute altered box…

and the hidden butterflies on lower levels ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Love these ๐Ÿ™‚ย  And I also love all the whimsy with all the different colors that go together so well…

Check out the pearls tied in this the rolled paper and ties with a gromet… very cool!

In the lower right corner is more fun stuff…

Like this fussy cut bird and sitting on a rolled flower with a pearl for it’s center… the flower is almost covered but still peeking out adding LOADS of layers to this corner of the frame.. and that crocheted flower had a pearl center I removed for this more antique jeweled center ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Don’t iss the baby dragonfly brad ๐Ÿ™‚

In the upper right corner is my fave part… a butterfly with a 50 stamped in it.ย  Pammy made this with Martha Stewart clay and a mold of the butterfly then used a rubber stamp for the numbers… I colored in the numbers to show off the 50 a bit around the white and we layered it and whalaah!

Another cool part of this is the fern leaf we added… Pammy made these cute fern with leaves out of cardboard and mod podge and paint!ย  Isn’t it a fun addition!ย  I also love the pops of light blue around it!ย

Then the upper right corner… the dove is flying across the frame here…

And I love the “Our Life” charm below the cluster of flowers… and the whimsical pink butterfly because I had added the pop of hot pink for the bird to sit on ๐Ÿ™‚

So how did we do it???

ย We started with a focus pic, the box, scraps of paper from one line… and lots of imagination!
Here was the table when I first got there…

with some of the embellishments for me to choose from…

and a box with fun stuff to get me started ๐Ÿ™‚

And then the beginning was born!

I wanted my parents pic to be circular but Pammy thought if we cut the hole in the paper instead of cutting the pic it would look better… I think she is right!ย  What do you think???

The curled paper is done by wetting the paper lighting and curling it around something and letting it dry or drying it with a heat gun.ย  doesn’t it give a nice effect ๐Ÿ™‚

Next we added mulberry paper ripped into little pieces to the outside and inside edges of the box…

I didn’t take a pic of this step but you can see it really well above and the paper and box below ๐Ÿ™‚

Next … while that was drying I cut a template from cardboard the size of the base and started designing…

And adding…

Then when the box was dry enough we started layering it from the bottom up in the box…

We used pieces of corrugated cardboard between paper layers to show off the layers better and give us more height!

To get this unembellished design… then we embellished to give the final effect… Take a look again ๐Ÿ™‚

I just hope they like it as much as I had fun making it….

Now back to quilting ๐Ÿ™‚

Half done on quilting the pinwheels… then I will add butterflies to the white spaces on the middle of the quilt ๐Ÿ™‚

My beautiful daughter and an aloe update too!

Can you believe it is taller than her and she is almost 15 now… this is her on one of her last days of school… ๐Ÿ™‚

Have a blessed weekend and hope you enjoyed this post!

I am soooo blessed :)

As May ends and 5 years ago so much tragedy hit our family I want to recall all that I now have to be blessed with.

Know what those purple flowers are???

I have 4 great kids ๐Ÿ™‚

DL helps when I do vids and is my go to person for all things technical, historic or trivia like.
James lives in Tennesse with his beautiful wife and has an aspiring medical career and calls once a week just to check on me ๐Ÿ™‚
Mike is about to graduate from high school.
Brandi is my only girl and the baby of the family… although at almost 15 she is NO BABY! lol
Love all my kids ๐Ÿ™‚

starting to mature a bit now…

I have 4 great friends plus one awesome honey ๐Ÿ™‚

Pam has been my friend the longest and even though our friendship started out close by to each other most of our friendship has evolved long distance and we know each other so well… She is a little older than me and her wise advice is coveted on a regular!
Brandy I met while working as a charge nurse in a large pediatric critical care where I trained her to our practices there.ย  She went on to be a shooting star in her field and is now a stay at home mom so we get more time to chat!ย  Love that ๐Ÿ™‚
Connie I also met at work but only got close to over the last couple years as I have begun quilting our friendship grew and we are now very close ๐Ÿ™‚ย  We have similar family situations and even though she is a grandma and I am not yet we find PLENTY to chat about ๐Ÿ™‚
Joyce lives the furthest from me being in California… we met online and have yet to meet in person but we chat on Skype and on the phone and via email… we enjoy papercrafting together and sharing about our families.ย  Joyce is quite a bit older than me and has lots of great advice from her years of mothering to help me with the teenage angst I face with my son ๐Ÿ™‚

My closest and most precious though is the friendship I have with my honey.ย  He loves me even when I fail at something.. he makes me laugh when I am sad and he listens to how I say something not just what I say.ย  He knows me better than I do myself sometimes.ย  Thanks honey!ย  You rock my world!

see the nectar leaking out???

I am blessed… now I will get back to quilting… heading to 3/8 done on these pinwheels I am quilting … baby steps gets it done with hand quilting ๐Ÿ™‚

So relaxing… today we are gonna go to the beach and I will quilt and my honey will read… will we like that???ย  Something new to ponder ๐Ÿ™‚

Take care and God bless you!

Hope you find something or someone (as I have) to be grateful for in your life ๐Ÿ™‚

Kathi

P. S. My honey is sacked out on the bed still reading and I am still quilting… just back home now… the beach is windy but a great place to get a lot of quilting done quickly we found ๐Ÿ™‚

My latest obsession :)

I have watched all the “Quilty” episodes up til current so I have been searching for more vids to watch on quilting to help me become more creative and find my own voice in this craft.ย  I have found this lady who calls herself the Gourmet Quilter ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Check out this vid on how to make mug rugs… about 4 1/2″ square and super cute!ย  The vid is about 8 minutes just so you know ๐Ÿ™‚

So that is my latest obsession!ย  What is yours ???ย  Here’s my progress on Pam’s quilt thus far…

I have 6 pinwheels completely quilted ๐Ÿ˜€ย  Here is a close up of the quilting I am doing on one ๐Ÿ™‚

Are you ready to quilt???ย  I am excited to see what creativity lies within you that hasn’t been unleashed in quilting whether you quilt a lot or a little or never before ๐Ÿ™‚

My daughter has been stippling a lot… color and black stipples and she is really doing quality stuff ๐Ÿ™‚

My sons don’t express their creativity as much in artistic ways.ย  More in how they cope with the day to day I would say.

Did your friends or kids learn from you… did you learn from someone???

Okay now for a quick tip.ย  Handquilting is hard on your fingers… so simply cut a circle about 3/4″ around from electrical tape to cover your damaged fingertips… still have the same “feeling” but protects your skin from needle pokes and slips.ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Congrats… you made it to the end… enjoy a view of the intercoastal and the little town I live in called Port Orange ๐Ÿ™‚

A quilting I will go!

The quilt top and back were waiting to be sandwiched….

And I was giddy with all that I accomplished in such a short period of time ๐Ÿ™‚
I just started cutting this quilt out May 16!!!ย  So 10 days to go from this…

to this…

This is my 5th quilted project… first I made a pillow top.ย  But this is the first one I pieced on my own when points needed to match and such so it really mattered more… and no… all my points don’t match but it is a wonderful quilt top ๐Ÿ™‚

Isn’t the clothes line delightful for displaying the quilt top!ย  I want my honey to install one on our fence ๐Ÿ™‚ย  It makes it look like stained glass like this though ๐Ÿ™‚

So I figured with all the time and zeal for this quilting thing I have why not open a fb page for those interested but intimidated by quilting and a place experienced quilters could go to share ideas and Yahoo moments … or find a shoulder to cry on like I did the other day when I sewed a seam wrong… for a long way!!! lolย  I can laugh now but I was crying then!ย  So come visit me at Patchwork Friends here!

Patchwork Friends was created as an invite or request only so it is closed and not everyone will want our quilt chatter on their newsfeed… not to have anything rude or risque involved… just quilty friends looking for others to chat with in a safe environment.

I had my quilting friend Denise embroider my name and the year on this quilt… it is for my very best friend of over 20 years ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Pamela actually chose the design and the fabrics with my guidance… but she is artsy so not much really ๐Ÿ™‚

Denise is embroidering my signature on the quilt top ๐Ÿ™‚

Didn’t that turn out nice???

I weeded all the strings and stabilizer off… I had already practiced on other things first… tip here is not to use the point of your scissors… you can easily cut your quilt top removing the stabilizer too close on the back.

So I sandwiched next… the backing I sewed with a center seam instead of 2 side seams because it was such a busy batik fabric.ย  AND…. I was ready to get to the quilting! lol

I officially took my first stitch in a hoop that a great person sent to me in another facebook group I am a part of… so sweet of her… but for this part of the quilt I need to quilt hoopless it seems… so I am .. and it is soooo wonderful to have the needle in the fabric again… with yet a new design!

So if you have made it though this quilt story how about a pic of the aloe vera bloom ๐Ÿ˜€

Have a blessed Memorial Day.. my honey is a veteran and I plan to spoil him like crazy … like I do every day! ๐Ÿ™‚

Aloe blooms and the back yard is alive!

I have posted several pics from my back yard because it is where I see so many wonderful color combos…

Purple Queen!
Azalea blooms!
Mexican Petunia’s
And that last one I don’t know the name of but love the frosty green of the leaves so deep and gorgeous with the flourescent purple blooms… it has been very cold tolerant too!ย  And in that pic you can see the bright green elephant ears in the background… just stunning colors ๐Ÿ™‚ย  And I am not a huge earthy green person… I am more a lime girl ๐Ÿ™‚
But the star of the back yard is definitely the aloe vera!ย  Look at those fireworks getting ready to bust open and draw in hummingbirds!ย  Won’t that make a lovely shot!

ย And a close up to see all the stages of blooming there is going on with this plant… it will feed hummingbirds for a while with all these blooms!

ย Right now the color is more of a coral orange… but it changes every day!ย  We are talking to it and watering it when it doesn’t rain enough… but so far it has just been a great show without much effort!ย  Just using cactus soil and having a root bound pot removed and placed it in our home made show piece of a pot!ย  Yay ๐Ÿ™‚
Now take a look at my TABLE!

Currently I am putting all the squares together on this quilt design to make the quilt top… then I can make my sandwich and start quilting all the pinwheels in aqua blue!ย  Yay ๐Ÿ™‚

Have a blessed day and hope you have enjoyed this time with me today!

Piecing a double pinwheel block pattern

Welcome to my tutorial on how to make a double pinwheel block that will look like this…

And a lot of them that will give you this overall pattern if set square…

This block would be extra fun set on point though… and a fun block it has been for me to learn precise piecing…

If you haven’t quilted before you CAN do this… but learn from an expert and watch qnntv.com Quilty with Mary Fons or beg your local quilt guild to help you… you will find your style as you create quilts for those you love!

Okay… now onto the fun ๐Ÿ™‚

Gather your supplies….

Sewing machine & Scissors
Iron & Board
Rotary cutter & Mat
Rulers of all kinds ๐Ÿ™‚
Fabric & Thread made for machine quilting
ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  (30 to 50 wt.. no lighter is recommended for a sturdy quilt)

And the supplies for this block….

fabric yardage is one main color for your background (mine is white)
fabric in 2 contrasting colors (mine is green and blue)
small ruler for rotary cutting
rotary cutter
snip scissors (mine are baby ginghers and they are super sharp!
and….
watch this vid to see how these half square triangles (hst’s) come together ๐Ÿ™‚ย  just 5 minutes!

Let’s put this block together!

Cut your fabric to the desired size of the finished block… for mine my finished size is 9 1/2″… so my fabric squares wound up being…
4 1/2″ square 1 background color and 1 small pinwheel color and 2 large pinwheel color = 4 squares
2 7/8″ squares in background color = 8 squares

I played with scraps until I found a size I liked… then measured the hst pairs and cut my 8 squares a little larger to give the block a little room for moving…. thus the magic 7/8″ measurement even though my square measured 3/4″.

With your pieces cut it is time to sew together your large squares as I have them paired above so you end up with a small pinwheel and a larger pinwheel… put right sides together and sew 1/4″ from the edge all the way around… then they will look like this…

ย Now press those squares to relax the thread and slice them as in the video criss cross like this…

Ta dah!ย  You have your 8 hst’s in no time!
Now lets get those hst’s ready to work for us by prepping them ๐Ÿ™‚

ย First press them open and PRESS TO the dominant pinwheel color… so when I set them on my pressing board I just put them that dominant color up so blue is up ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Run the iron over them and whalahhh!

ย 8 triangles and some good snips are next.ย  I use little ginghers I got with a coupon at Joann’s but just a sharp good cutting pair for fabric only works ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Now snip off all the dogears to decrease the bulk… this is important …

ย That bulk adds up over a quilt so remove it now…
Now set out your pinwheels and bring in your 8 background fabric squares to make this arrangement… or another if you choose… you have lots of options playing around with the hst’s you have made…

ย Now it is time to start sewing them together…

Start by completing the center… the block goes together best if you watch this vid on putting together the middle pieces.

As per the vid start by laying sewing together these pieces….

Sew them together with a 1/4″ seam and butted close to each other chain piecing style…. so they look like this when you are done…

You can butt them right up next to each other too… I just like to have a little give in mine… lol
Press the freshly sewn edges and open up the squares to make rectangles and close them right sides together on each other as in the vid like this….

Pull them tight and go with which way the seam wants to naturally go so that your seam allowances are opposite… that part is critical to an unbulky block.

Sew with a 1/4″ seam and Press the freshly sewn seam…
Next trim all your strings from sewing and clip the joining thread where all the squares meet as outlined in the video… this is the BEST way I have found.

Now finally you can Press all your seams in the direction you sewed them.ย  So they lay down nice and flat like this.ย  Make sure you fluff out the center so it spreads out like a mini pinwheel or else the middle of your pinwheel will be standing up! lol

And the front side looks like this…

Next we will chain piece the outside blocks together in pairs first then to each other or this main block.ย  Specifically we will do it like this…

ย So above we are joining by folding to the left from your board to the sewing machine with 1/4″ seams each pair above… then Press the freshly sewn seams on your ironing board…

ย With those sewn together now it is time to chain piece the larger units so first sew the centerpiece and the left side unit together and continue with the 2 top pieces and 2 bottom pieces.ย  Finally come bring the centerpiece back to the sewing machine on the chain and add the right side unit.ย  Almost there…ย

ย Press the freshly sewn seams everywhere… and you will have a strip that looks like this with the long top unit and long bottom unit left to sew on… sew them on making sure your seams remain opposite each other.

ย Finally you are ready for the final press… press all the seams the way they were sewn…

ย Tadaah!ย  You have one double pinwheel block complete!

My Plan with this block is…

To make 42 like in the group shot above and add a border to finish my quilt top… the quilt will measure 63″ x 74 1/2″ when complete ๐Ÿ™‚

So this is my first quilting tutorial and I would appreciate feedback on how helpful or if it is too intense or not intense enough.

Thanks for reading and have a blessed day!
