About designoriginalsbykc

A 50-something honey, Mom, Grammy, & lover of all things vintage living in the North Carolina mountain tops :)

So much fun and progress to share!

We got minimal snow compared to just a tad north of us that got a lot… but no power outages around here in North Carolina where we live. But we did get a NEW ROOF this week on a warmer than usual day!

We chose Shakewood shingles and mostly they are dimensional shingles πŸ™‚

What we had was 18 years old and plain flat shingles in dark green and dirty…

Previous roof….

Our next outside goal is to remove the bushes across the front of the house to open it up to the porch more πŸ™‚ I am excited about this project too!

But in the mean time… Rick has been working more on my Sewing Room and got the closet all shelved up !!!

So today I am linking several things to Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitchers HERE <<<… I have rewrapped a LOT of fabric… I am moving the orientation on the wooden bolts in the closet shelving to hold more and stick out less. That is a lot of Hand-ee work too!

I have started filling the shelves just outside the closet and got that box off the buffet that was overflowing with donate or sell items I pointed out last week in my post. This room is looking remarkable thanks to daily work and a handy honeyπŸ’– I have emptied 6 boxes of fabric already! They are smaller boxes but still!!! I have plenty more to organize this week though!

Between organizing… I have been hand stitching on the rooster and FINISHED it! It has a waddle to make sure it looks rooster-ish too! What do you think?

Enjoying a bit of white zinfandel wine as I stitch in the evenings…

My next goal is to make the hen and rooster into a wall hanging/table topper for a good friend who loves chickens πŸ™‚ For myself and the other redwork I have completed I am starting on this bowl and rolling pin next…

This block reminds me af making cookies with my bestie 🀩

Meanwhile… for my sew along it is Dresden week… I have gotten 2 of the 4 blocks complete because it has been a week focused on other handy work really as you can see…

I hope the recipient loves these blocks as much as I do… I am machine sewing these instead of hand stitching them for durability as this will be a bed quilt πŸ™‚ I have had fun doing the Dresden’s though … do you?

I finally got my honey’s shirt done right with fabric I purchased from my local quilt shop…

And if you look at this photo above… you can tell Rick cleaned out the gas log fireplace… removed all the soot build up and laid the logs out in a better orientation for even display of fire… I love that maintenance he did! I would have never thought of needing to do that … now I will know!

The next shirt I will make will be this fabric …

The pocket detail solid fabric is really a taupe stone color not green blue as it appears in this photo… hopefully I will have it done and get the model to show it off for next weeks post πŸ˜‰

My grand who lives in very northern Tennessee enjoyed the snow they got….

on a sled… isn’t Ellie precious!!!

The white tulips are opening and looking fabulous! As is our Molly with a bandana I made her from some scraps!

In closing… I would love to hear what you would do if you sorted your fabric.

I have plenty to keep, some to donate and some to destash in under 1 yard increments… How do you sell your fabrics??? Marketplace, facebook destash groups, ebay???? It is all quilt shop quality with even some kits I just have never made ! Your feedback is important to me friends. Have a blessed week and please… if you made it this far…leave a comment 😊 I respond to all of them too !

Happy Valentine’s Day to ALL!

Whether the country you live in shares in celebrating Valentine’s Day today or not… let’s just celebrate LOVE! Do something nice for someone today … unexpectedly πŸ’•

Here are some miniature roses we can plant in Springtime ❀

My honey spoils me and also got me not only those roses for planting in our yard but also some white tulips too!

Then as if that wasn’t more than enough.. I woke to some turtles waiting for me to enjoy!!!!

What are your Valentine traditions… these are things we try to do each year for this day since we have been together…. so 9 Valentine’s so far… and I love giving back! Today I will retry to make my honey another shirt… when I am not spending time with embroidery… :)🧡

This chicken needs a little work on it today… maybe even finish it or get to the outer ring πŸ™‚ This will join the other chicken to make a special something for a good friend! Since this and cutting out a shirt are my goals today and both hand-y jobs… I will like them with Kathy and the Crew HERE <<<< Come see all the fun Valentine show and shares there todayπŸ’ž

This week I made lots of other progress and took pics just for y’all!

I made these 6 block types… with only 1 needing a duplicate made to complete the set… so 7 blocks total this week in my BOHO HEART QAL ~ this is a really fun way to make a busy big quilt too! I like is way more than I expected to πŸ™‚

And we spent some time organizing the open boxes I had managed to micro sort in the sewing room…

Above starting in the top left hand pic…. we brought in the buffet I had in my sewing room previously and wanted it back… the tall check of drawers beside that will hold my bag making parts and pieces and lots of fabric… next to the right top is my chair for this room with wall decor in several boxes from my previous sewing room… not sure what will stay and what will go now though! The “k” thread holder needs a home once the room gets settled for sure though.

The bottom of that pic above includes new storage for my scraps.. I did share this pic with Bonnie Hunter and got a high five from her πŸ™‚ The shelves will hold books and pics and decor as well as up and coming projects in boxes or bins… a menagerie for sure… maybe even our blue metallic featherweight when we unbox it. Next is a pic of the closet… all that will be cleaned out and leaving the hanging rod… the bottom will be all shelves to hold my batting, pillows, stuffing on the left and center will be fabric on my wooden bolts… and right will be overflow of those categories. The last picture is projects waiting to be made and a big box of fabric too! My word I have a LOT of fabric!!!! Hopefully this new way of organizing will wrangle the fabric and the projects so I can quickly get back to creating!

I had hoped to pull out the quilt top I plan to start hand quilting soon but the shelving and planning the closet took more time… wood is expensive too y’all! It is covid I am sure that makes these things go up in price currently… so we are buying just what we need as we use it so as not to over spend !

In the photo above… I didn’t single out the box I point to here…. but that is give away stuff or sell.. we shall see… it is heavy though and Rick needs to move it out for me πŸ™‚

I really love this organizing of my scrap bins… they were in clear shoe box containers with lids…. these IRIS bins I found at Target and had delivered to my home as it is not near… The first set of 2 I ordered … 1 got broke so they forgave that and reshipped 2 more and they came unhurt at all! YAY πŸŽ‰

Because I want to grab a color of scraps and make quilts I had my honey nip off the stops on each of the drawers so that they stop but can easily be pulled all the way out and taken to my sewing area I am using….

This sewing room will house my 301 Singer vintage in cabinet and my 319w Singer vintage in table… I am making a rolling cutting table with shelves out of the cart I thought would house my printer. Rick was able to move some things about in our little cabin and now the printer and laptop for printing things sits neatly on his side of the bed. YAY again😊

Here is my current sewing nook…. those doors behind lead out to our screened back porch πŸ™‚

So we will see what we are able to accomplish this week… come back next week to see what’s up! Please share any organizing ideas you have in the comments… I am all ears to hear what works for you or what you think might get my 319 in that sewing room ! lol Kathi

Enjoying a cool February so far!

Welcome to my blog where we are getting a light coating of snow at the moment… we will see how much we end up with… it is calling for 1 to 3 inches and we have 1″ so far πŸ™‚

I focused on prepping for the QAL for the Boho Heart Pattern I am planning to make… as some 4 patches for that QAL are my new blog header. The rest of this weeks makings are here….

I made varying numbers of 5 different blocks… I am having so much fun working with these bright fun colors too ❀

I also photographed the mess my sewing room was in….

I have now opened and macro sorted each box in that room… today I hope to work more in that room πŸ™‚ For now my sewing machine stays in the living room but I hope to get it out in the near future!!! But Y’all! I HAVE A LOT OF FABRIC!!!! lololol

I did order some fabric for new napkins that coordinate with our graphite base color in the kitchen/living room ….

Here I tested my Aurifil grey 28 wt thread to see how it would look then on the right is the design I decided on… the goal is that once washed the edges will fray as in the first photo before I cut them to size… 10″ x 18″ gives 4 folds and it will look like this…

This is the best representation of all the color of this graphite fabric and thread together too πŸ™‚ I have done all the machine sewing on Cleopatra my 319w Singer πŸ™‚

But my favorite job this week was finishing Appalachian Delight quilt and washing and drying… and sleeping under it!!!!

Here is my collage photo… but let me share a few extras with you…

I hand quilted a yin yang on the top center of the wide border….

I signed this quilt when I started it in 2020 thinking it would be done then… but the Pandemic came along and time got lost…

I am linking this fun finish we really love sleeping under with Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching Crew HERE <<<< Shei s celebrating National Embroidery Month in Canada… is this a world wide celebration??? In the US February is known as Black History Month.

My goal to commemorate Black History Month is to listen to the unabridged audiobook Roots… I have been challenged by my son and his bride to be to re read this book and they enjoyed listening but it is 30 hours of listening… so I best get the next quilt on the frame as that is my best time to listen as I mindlessly quilt on a project… what is next on the frame you ask??? Why it is a quilt top Connie left with me .. more on that later !

Next week I will join Kathy’s embroidery celebration too though… other handiwork I did with my hands was to put on a Valentine commemoration on my nails…..

I really enjoy Color Street nail strips and how fun and easy and low maintenance they are!!!!

Hope you have a wonderful and productive week wherever you are in this world… we are seeing a decrease in some cases of Corona here in the US… hope you are too in your area of the world!

A new month is almost upon us !!!

I am so excited with all we have accomplished in January… in 2 months almost since we moved into this cabin and we still have a few loads left in our storage room to go through but, that is ok!

I have been showing you snippets of the inside… but above you can see some of the outside… we have 1.41 acres of land with this home… but most is woods behind the house!

We have contracts for repainting the house and putting on a fresh roof and removing the old…. my honey has lifted the left end of the porch where it was failing and before the outside work gets started he will do a bit more work on that to make sure it is level all across for sure! I am blessed to have a handy honey for sure!!!

We had a special 2 hour visit from my bestie this past week too….

We exchanged a few things and shared a little lunch before she was back on the road heading home . What a grand covid visit it was though just to be in the same room as my bestie and get her 2 cents on my sewing room thoughts.

One thing she left was a pieced and partially hand quilted table runner for our new bar! She left it for me to finish and bind…

And once finished and washed and dried…

And a close up of the table runner itself….

There is no pattern… we just gave her our dream dimensions for a table runner (aka placemat built for 2) and she delivered…. literally! And the color of the binding is the color of the new napkins I will make!

Cleopatra has been quite handy! So next up is a Quilt Along for a more intricate pattern…

I will be using some of these lovely fabrics….

Still waiting on a couple neutrals to show up and my napkin fabric too ❀

So enjoy your cuppa something good while I open the pattern book for Boho Heart and start organizing myself… this is a QAL that goes through May I think… then I plan to hand quilt the flimsy and gift it to a very special friend ❀

Meanwhile I am half way around hand stitching the binding down on the big bed quilt I have been working on for quite a while now but things keep interrupting….

and we uncovered some hidden quilts and hung one up yesterday….

I finished this in 2015!

And I have a flimsy Connie dropped off during her visit that will be next up on the quilting frame πŸ˜€ THAT makes me happy!

I am linking all this hand quilting progress and goodness to Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching group HERE <<<< She is wondering what your fave hoop or frame is to hand stitch with…. mine is my frame…. it is a Hinterberg frame my honey built from a kit and wood and metal conduit we found at the local home improvement store… the kit came from Hinterberg.com in the USA though πŸ™‚

So what is your focus for February in regards to hand stitching or are you like me and have some hand stitching to do as well????

Thanks for visiting … please leave a comment so I know you were here… I reply to each comment too ❀

Are you happy where you are in your life???

I wanted to start out my post today with this Mandy Hale quote… I love it and think it may be meant for you too!

I finished the wedding wallhanging including the hanging sleeve using an AQS Youtube to help me πŸ™‚ I will share after the lovely couple has received and opened their wall hanging… I think they will love it though ❀

I have been making my honey a new shirt… it has been a while and I made this pocket just way too big so I will be fixing that today by hand!

I have enjoyed my Singer 319w being set up safely… I put the binding on the big quilt I finished before we moved and have been slowly taking time here and there to finish it…

It is then ready to wash… no need to label as I already did.. this quilt is meant for our bed πŸ™‚ this hand stitching will definitely be on my list to spend time with today!

All this plus more I can’t share with you yet makes today a perfect day for quilting!!!!

Hope over the Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching brigade HERE <<<< and see what others are sharing πŸ™‚

In the meantime I am listening to “Atomic Habits” and “Decluttering at the Speed of Life” on Audible and enjoying them each immensely… then I listen to music some or watch on Youtube some other faves…

Meanwhile my honey has put the finishing touches on the bar in the kitchen…

It is perfect for us and for this cabin…. we feel sooo blessed! Happy Sunday friends ❀

In the Home Stretch …

The Wedding Quilt for my son and his bride to be is almost done y’all!

Molly is always near by…

I am binding the last side now so by the time you read this I should be whip stitching down the hanging sleeve for it πŸ™‚ That is THE LAST STEP before washing and wrapping for presentation on Valentine’s I am hoping πŸ˜€ Linking this awesome progress to Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitching HERE << Come see her working on her oldest UFO πŸ™‚

So how did I make this happen you ask?

Me and my Cleopatra sewing early morning in the living room πŸ˜‰
How my honey prefers I set up temporarily … lol!

So when I took their wedding quilt off the frame to move the refrigerator there when the new one came in…

Then the bar is finally in place and getting polyurethane coated for durability.

Slowly we are making this place ours… and feeling more and more like this is it πŸ˜€

Hope you have a blessed Sunday and find something in this crazy world to be grateful for.

Happy Sunday my Stitching Friends!

As I reflect on this week in America I am sad then I am proud that we can dust ourselves off mentally and move forward. That is a good thing and all I will mention about all of the events of this week in America …

Grabbed from my friend Cathie to share with you all!

We have made great progress this week around here… Rick got a recliner… we located cushions for the rocking chair… other chairs found other places to be too… I went through the final non sewing room box in the house and we rearranged a bit after that. Rick got a kitchen bar he is building in usable condition waiting for stain and a top for it … and where is that skill saw he wonders????!!!

I got the above organizer for my computer monitor to sit on which lives on a cool wood and formica hotel style table with no drawer… here in the bedroom… I don’t use it much anymore… just to blog and search for items we wanna buy actually … I look at emails and such on my phone more lately! So this is a fine place for it to land in our little cabin.

I plan to put on fresh nail polish strips today so all my nail stuff is out you can see… otherwise this is my contained clutter I love living with πŸ™‚

I really enjoy having “pretty” nails and I work and quilt…

Grabbed from that same friend as the first MEME and edited to make appropriate for any day! LOL

So now to share you you all and Kathy Quilts Stitching crew You can find them all HERE)…. I have had a productive week… I did work on the chicken but no more pics of them for a bit… I want the recipient to be surprised with what I do next πŸ˜‰

I got so much done this week… I may be able to slow stitch my way off the frame today… The texture of the quilting will have them touching it all the time I think! It is sooo cool!!!!! But seriously, then it will have to rest for a bit… I have the binding, backing, label, extra fabric if I think of anything else I need and enough for the hanging sleeve for them… I have talked to them about hanging this…so it is green light for their upcoming wedding in April EXCEPT I need to focus on getting my sewing room set up from boxes! lol

Yep, my sewing room has had NO attention.. I have been fine with that but I have mending and hemming to do, shirts to cut out and sew together for my honey and a couple quilts to throw together as I have time… I need my sewing room now! lol

As I have been cleaning, organizing, sorting, sewing, and quilting and embroidering… I have been listening to podcasts and Audible books on my phone through my headphones…

First I wanna share Atomic Habits by James Clear… the author of the book reads it and it is LIFE CHANGING. My son Michael is gonna listen to it so we can challenge each other and have someone to hold us each accountable… I am excited.. On chapter 3 on this one and LOVE IT!!!

Next up I got my Bible when I unpacked initially and I am ready to attempt to understand this book better with this online podcast that is also on YouTube from the first season which is similar to the 3rd season of this year of the bible series. It is amazing how Tara Leigh Cobble’s commentary challenges you personally to read and make your own assessments… HERE is a link to the Youtube Playlist if you are interested ❀

It is an oasis of calm in the midst of this week in history! Look toward God y’all!!!! funniest thing is… I never read non fiction and both of these studies are non fiction! lol

Have you ever plugged in a good book or some music and just quilted, cleaned, organized whatever and realized 30 minutes and lots of accomplishments had happened??? That was my week πŸ™‚

Take care my friends and thanks for leaving a comment about you favorite part of this post today… I would love to continue to provide you with uplifing content πŸ˜€

A Busy Entrance into 2021!!!

As we all enter the New Year…. we do it differently… this has been a very busy entrance for us πŸ™‚ A friend shared this meme on facebook… I thought I would share with each of you!

I put on fresh nail strips in anticipation of the new year coming….

And I have hand quilted like crazy this week amongst other goings on…

I didn’t have time to sit down with the chickens yet… lol! But I have made great progress above from the bottom of the wall hanging where I was last week πŸ™‚ Linking this progress to Kathy’s gang of hand stitchers…. HERE <<<<<

We scored a new stove to accompany our new microwave… black stainless is soooo yummy!!!!

And here you can see how we have set up our living room with my honey’s new recliner and I am using the nice wooden rocking chair πŸ™‚

We had a couple days of warm weather and got to enjoy the house all opened up. But today it is back to needing the heat on and the doors shut… soon spring will emerge as fast as time is flying though! lol

If you look above you see 2 big black rolling chairs at my frame… 1 is waiting to go to my sewing room which is full of boxes and waiting to get organized… but the bedroom and the living room / kitchen are looking mighty fine already πŸ˜€

I am starting my days out lately to balance the busyness…with a devotion my aunt I was named after gifted me and I recently found again….

I am also listening to a podcast on the Bible. It is such a different way to hear about it than I was used to in church … I am really enjoying the deep subjects she leaves us with each day called “The Bible ReCap”.

And not to worry… I am still working on organizing and paring down where able… but minimalism just doesn’t work for us… I love my fabric and such and my honey loves his tools and other hobbies. πŸ˜€

So Happy 2021 from me to you!

We have about 5 more loads to get from storage… the rest won’t fit so we will be selling the remains as a lot… it is heartbreaking for us as we only stored our favorite things… but our most favorite things are each other and our hobbies. How would you choose???

In the comments let me know what you think of my 2021 new closure too ❀ thanks for visiting!!!!

Post Christmas Relaxation & Stitching ….

I certainly hope you had a very Merry Christmas… now we can look forward to a new year and hopefully vaccines for all that want them to fight this nasty virus!

We had a fun Christmas in our new home….

I put the wall hanging for my son and his bride to be on my quilting frame and mapped out additional hand quilting… THIS is all I can share at the moment as I don’t want them to see what I am actually doing thus far… BUT I have rolled the quilt on the frame already and am moving on up πŸ™‚

I also started stitching on the other chicken I had on this panel…

My hope is these will be mug rugs for a great friend of mine … by her request πŸ™‚

We had a good snow on Christmas Eve that lasts still till today…

We had about 4 inches overall and it has been wonderful to enjoy!

My honey got my a gift certificate to our local quilt shop and picked up a charm pack of some fabric he liked. I plan to make a table runner for our island we are making in our kitchen…

Using dresdens and picking up another charm pack to make 5 dresdens to make the length we want … I’ll use the gift certificates to pick up some yardage for the project too! So excited πŸ˜€

I also picked up a cute long sleeved shirt to wear in this chilly weather we are having…

And made sure to have a fresh manicure for the season ….

My nails are getting much better care now that we are settled and I can moisturize daily again πŸ™‚ This set of nail strips is called “Wrap it up”… I love it πŸ™‚ My honey says they look like candy canes! lol

My question for you all???? >>>> How should I make this second chicken look more like a girl than a boy… I feel like the completed one looks like a guy… so now I need to make the other look more girlie… I will add their names with embroidery on each mug rug… but these are special people to me and I would like YOUR feedback πŸ™‚ <<<<

I hope you had a merry Christmas even if you didn’t get to see all the family you usually do… we stayed to ourselves for safety πŸ™‚ Waiting for the immunizations to become available…. we are happy to welcome 2021 and welcome new leadership soon after as well.

Thanks for visiting and have a great week ahead!

As Christmas Approaches….

We are slowly getting settled in our new home… it is a cabin in the woods and it is delicious!!!

Christmas Card from one of my son’s (Michael) and his bride to be!

Last week I did blog post but it did not include any quilting or stitching… so I did not link anywhere and later found out that that post is a static post I had named “It’s Christmas time in the country” and not a blog post! lol Now I can’t figure out how to change it or link you to it but if you wander around my site here… you will find it πŸ˜€

Molly has done well with the transition from free run in her yard in our previous home to going out on leash now… she is doing great actually and loves our new home!

So this week I am here … we have had a busy week emptying 1 storage unit in our Rogue. And now we are bringing one load at a time to our new home from the other storage unit closer to where we used to live or about *45 minutes from here*. Keep us in your thoughts as we continue to work on that storage unit … most of it will be sold, given, donated, etc as we have lived a while without it but some it my quilting and fabric stuff πŸ™‚

I love this Bonnie-ism and wanted to save it to share with you all!

My honey already got my frame back up and I actually loaded the wedding quilt I am stitching on for Michael and Kristen on the frame so no pics of that!!!!

But I can share the pepper grinder red work I finished this week….

And the chicken I started on next πŸ™‚

Here is a view of our bedroom… with the quilt I hand quilted last year on it…. the one I just finished quilting before the move is still waiting for binding to be added and that won’t happen til my sewing room gets a bit of organization and attention by my honey….

I found this on Facebook and immediately agreed with Charlie Brown… I have everything I need.. we are donating a LOT right now and happy to have that opportunity to πŸ™‚

I am linking this heavily hand stitching post to Kathy’s Slow Sunday Stitchers HERE<<<<… I will spend the day doing hand quilting on the frame and hand stitching on the redwork … how about you??? What are you up to my friends??? Got all your Christmas making and baking done yet???

Hope you each have a very Merry Christmas and stick with the clan you live with if the virus is raging near you like it is here in the USA!
